Kotinoussa Park in Cádiz spans an area of 9,985 m² and was inaugurated in 2003. It derives its name from one of the three islands of the Phoenician “Gadeiras Archipelago”: Erytheia, Kotinoussa, and Antipolis (Isla de León). Erytheia was the northernmost island, stretching from the current Castle of San Sebastián to the Island of Sancti Petri, while Kotinoussa Island was situated between them.

This park is located on the grounds of the former Varela Military Barracks, which encompassed the Phoenician, Punic, and Roman necropolises. Building upon this historical background, the park offers an additional attraction through the cultural and educational exhibition of various archaeological artifacts discovered during excavations for the San José parking lot and the houses on Arcángel San Miguel.

The aim is to commemorate and promote the historical significance of the Cadiz necropolis. Thus, the park serves as an archaeological museum, providing a historical journey through the funerary arts of the earliest civilizations that inhabited Cádiz.

The park’s design features winding pathways that invite visitors to stroll and find places to rest, enhancing the overall experience.

The Paseo de Carlos III is a historic promenade located between Genoves Park and the Alameda de Apodaca effectively joining these two gardens together. The promenade dates back to 1927 and was created as a result of the progressive occupation of the military security area of the walled perimeter of Cadiz. The current architecture is the work of the architect Juan Talavera y Heredia, who also designed the remodeling of the Alameda de Apodaca and Marqués de Comillas gardens. The promenade’s design is a continuation of the Alameda and incorporates the same regionalist style.

The gardens are classified as an “Asset of Cultural Interest” and included in the General Catalog of the “Historical Heritage of Andalusia”. The promenade’s current shape is triangular, with its base just in front of the entrance to Parque Genovés. It consists of a first open space with a polygonal plan with a small central fountain and benches on the sides of the polygon. From this space there is a path covered by a pergola, with side exits to small circular gazebos, which communicates with the second open space in the garden, this one with a square floor plan surrounded by hedges, with benches at the corners and double side exits.

Inside the garden, a central axis can be clearly distinguished, with different squares, four of which are rounded, one rectangular, and another octagonal, wider, with a fountain in its center. The type of furniture used in the promenade is based on ceramics from Triana with wrought iron elements.

The Paseo de Carlos III is an important cultural and historic landmark in Cadiz, and its architectural style is characteristic of the city’s regionalist architecture. Visitors can enjoy a relaxing stroll along the promenade, taking in the beautiful architecture, fountains, and gardens.

Parque de los Cinco Continentes in Cádiz

The “Parque de los Cinco Continentes” (Park of the Five Continents) is a public park located along the Avenida de la Sanidad Pública. The park was inaugurated in 2003, with an area of 18,214 m². It occupies the space that was reclaimed on the old train line which is now underground. Before the work to move the train line, the city was effectively divided in two parts. The construction of this green area has created as an island for recreation, walking, and recreation along one of the two main avenues that form the backbone of the city.

The park features a variety of flora and fauna from each of the continents represented, as well as sculptures and other works of art. Its name is due to the fact that it is made up of species from the five continents that inhabit the surface of the Park. The five sections of the park represent Europe, Africa, Asia, America, and Oceania.

The Parque Fosos de la Tierra is a green area located adjacent to the Puertas de Tierra in Cádiz, housing part of the canvasses of the Defensive Wall of the Puertas de Tierra. The area was once a moat that formed part of the city’s defensive system, along with the access slopes to the ditch called “Glacis”, which was made up of a forward bastion flanked by two semi-bastions.

In the first half of the 20th century, the possibility of demolishing the entire complex was considered to allow greater access for vehicles to the city center as the city grew through areas outside the walls. However, it was decided to partially fill in the moats and open two new arches in the canvas of the wall. In 1999, the moat was transformed into a green zone, and in 2002, it was opened to the public as a green space.

Today, the Parque Fosos de la Tierra provides a connection to the pedestrian path that crosses a large part of this moat from the Puertas de Tierra and to the Plaza de la Constitución with the train station and the new bus station in the city. In addition to the dog friendly “canine” area, visitors can enjoy the scenic views of the wall canvasses and the park’s greenery.

As for the canvasses, they are the outer walls of a fortification that protected a town or city, often built in the shape of a polygon, with bastions projecting outward at regular intervals. These walls were usually high and thick, built to withstand enemy attacks and protect the city’s inhabitants. In the case of the Parque Fosos de la Tierra, the canvasses are part of the Defensive Wall of the Puertas de Tierra.
