Why I Love Cádiz in September

If someone asked me to recommend just one month to visit Cádiz, September would probably be my answer.

After the intensity of August, the city seems to take a deep breath. The beaches are quieter, the temperatures become much more comfortable, and everyday life starts to return to normal. The sea is still wonderfully warm, cafés and restaurants remain busy, and you can enjoy the city without feeling like you’re constantly escaping the heat.

Sunset cruise Cádiz

I’ve always thought September gives visitors the best of both worlds. You still get long sunny days and beach weather, but it’s also comfortable enough to wander through the Old Town for hours or sit in a plaza with a coffee without searching for the nearest patch of shade.

Weather in Cádiz in September

September still feels like summer in Cádiz, just a gentler version of it.

Daytime temperatures usually reach 26–28°C (79–82°F), while evenings cool to a comfortable 18–20°C (64–68°F). The fierce heat of August begins to fade, making it much easier to spend the whole day outdoors.

Rain is still uncommon, sunshine remains plentiful, and the Atlantic breeze continues to keep the city feeling fresh.

For me, this is when Cádiz becomes comfortable again. I can enjoy a long walk through the city without constantly looking for shade or planning my day around the hottest hours.

Sea Conditions and Beach Weather

One of the biggest surprises for first-time visitors is how warm the sea remains in September.

The Atlantic has spent the entire summer heating up, so swimming is often more enjoyable than it was in June or even July. I still head to the beach throughout September, but the atmosphere is completely different.

Enjoy Playa de Santa Maria del Mar Without the Summer Crowds

Playa de Santa Maria del Mar remains one of my favourite places during September. The beach is noticeably quieter than it was a few weeks earlier, finding a good spot is easy, and there’s a much more relaxed atmosphere.

It’s warm enough to spend the whole afternoon by the sea, yet comfortable enough to enjoy a long walk along the shoreline afterwards.

Watch the Sunset at La Caleta

La Caleta becomes one of my favourite places again in September.

Summer visitors have largely gone home, leaving the beach feeling much more local. The sunsets remain spectacular, and the evenings are warm enough to sit by the sea long after the sun disappears below the horizon.

My Favourite Things to Do in Cádiz in September

Wander Through the Old Town

September is when I start enjoying long walks around Cádiz again.

Neighbourhoods like El Pópulo and the Barrio de la Viña are much easier to explore without the intense summer heat. The narrow streets, historic squares, and hidden corners reveal themselves at a much gentler pace.

Visit Cádiz Cathedral

The cathedral is always worth visiting, but September makes the experience much more pleasant.

The climb to the tower no longer feels like a workout in the August heat, and you’ll often find fewer people enjoying the panoramic views over the city.

Climb Torre Tavira

September’s clearer air often makes the views from Torre Tavira even better.

The Camera Obscura remains fascinating, but I particularly enjoy standing on the rooftop watching the light change across the city and the Atlantic.

Discover Cádiz’s Roman History

This is also a great month to visit the Roman Theatre and the Gadir archaeological site.

Without the summer crowds, it’s much easier to take your time and appreciate just how old Cádiz really is.

September Is Perfect for Outdoor Dining

One of my favourite things about September is that eating outdoors becomes comfortable again.

During August, dinner often starts very late because of the heat. In September, evenings are warm rather than hot, making it the perfect time to enjoy tapas in one of the city’s plazas.

I still find myself heading to Mercado Central for fresh seafood, but I also spend more time sitting outside small neighbourhood bars with a glass of local wine and whatever fish has arrived that morning.

Day Trips I Recommend in September

Whale and dolphin tours, windsurfing, Roman ruins and cruises are all still high on the to do list during September in Cádiz.

September is also a wonderful time to visit Jerez de la Frontera.

Whether you’re interested in sherry, horses, or simply wandering around a beautiful Andalusian city, the cooler weather makes exploring far more comfortable than it is in midsummer.

Travel Tips From a Cádiz Resident

Don’t Assume Summer Has Finished

September still feels very much like summer here. Pack lightweight clothing, swimwear, sunglasses, and sunscreen because you’ll almost certainly use them.

Take Advantage of the Quieter Beaches

If you’ve always dreamed of enjoying Cádiz’s beaches without fighting for space, September is your month.

Walk Everywhere

This is when Cádiz really comes into its own as a walking city. The temperatures make exploring on foot a pleasure again, and you’ll notice details you might have missed during the rush to escape the August heat.

Enjoy the Local Rhythm

By September, many residents have returned from their holidays, schools are back, and everyday life resumes. Visitors get a much more authentic feel for the city while still enjoying fantastic weather.
