Cádiz is Europe’s oldest city and a standout destination in Andalucía, where ancient history, vibrant culture, fresh seafood, and ocean views come together on Spain’s Atlantic coast.

Beaches in Cádiz - La Caleta
Despite its rich past and coastal charm, it’s often overlooked by travelers heading to Seville or Granada. But Cádiz offers something unique—walkable streets packed with character, golden beaches, and a deep connection to Spain’s maritime history.
Listen to me, (Clive), talking about Cádiz

In this episode, you’ll hear why Cádiz is more than just a day trip from Seville or a coastal detour. From beachfront promenades and hidden Roman ruins to flamenco bars, puppet festivals, and fresh local tapas, this city offers a vibrant mix of history, culture, and ocean breeze.

When to Go to Cádiz?

Cádiz hosts a lively February carnival, but its full charm emerges in the springtime. The sea becomes swimmable, and nearby towns hold colorful ferias. Even in peak summer, the coastal breeze keeps temperatures cooler than other Andalusian cities.

Carnival time is in February in Cádiz but for me, spring onwards is the time for me to visit the city.
A City with Deep Roots

Cádiz began as Gadir, a Phoenician port founded in 1,100 BC. Sitting on a narrow peninsula, it has always looked outward. Columbus sailed from here, and its historic link with the Americas once made it one of Spain’s richest cities.

Today, traces of that legacy remain. Walk along a seaside promenade that doubled for Havana in a James Bond film. Explore ancient Roman docks hidden below the city, known locally as the Bluebird Caves. (Maybe even enjoy a flamenco show here!)

Visit the oceanside cathedral with its crypt, then walk to nearby ruins of a Roman theatre. The city gate, Puerta de Tierra, separates old Cádiz from a modern beach district. Along the coast, you’ll also find historic forts now used for art exhibitions.

Modern art also finds its place in the city. The contemporary art center beside the botanical gardens features rotating exhibitions near tiled fountains and towering trees.

Explore Cádiz from Above!

The Torre Tavira is a watchtower and the tallest point in the city of Cadiz, located 45 meters above sea level. It is situated in the Casa-Palacio de los Marqueses de Recaño (currently the Conservatory of Music of Cadiz) and was built in the Baroque style in the 18th century. It was designated as the official watchtower of the Cadiz port in 1778 because it had the highest elevation, and was named after its first watchman, Lieutenant Frigate D. Antonio Tavira.

Currently, it houses the Camera Obscura, one of the most symbolic tourist attractions in the city of Cadiz, as well as two exhibition halls and a viewpoint, from which the entire historic city center can be admired.

Its said that some of the best beaches in Spain are in Cádiz. Not surprising as it is almost an island and is mostly surrounded by water. Apart from lazing around and sunbathing there are plenty of options for sailing, whale watching, scuba diving, windsurfing and jet skiing.
