A Town Steeped in History
Los Barrios traces its origins back to 1704, when Spanish residents fleeing the British takeover of Gibraltar settled in the area. However, the region’s history dates much further back, with prehistoric remains from the Upper Paleolithic found nearby.
During the Muslim rule of Spain, the area was home to a Moorish settlement, later abandoned due to conflicts with Christian forces. In the 18th century, Los Barrios became a growing agricultural and trade hub, eventually establishing itself as an independent municipality in 1756.
